Kula Yoga Studio – branding & website

Kula is a rebrand of the previous ‘Falmouth Yoga Space’. The new owner felt that a fresh start was needed to help the brand stand out amidst a number of local competitors that all offered similar classes.

The aim was to create a warm and inviting look that leaned into the brand’s values of openness and community. The owner was keen for the studio to become more inclusive, not wanting it to be too heavily geared towards experienced yogis only, it had to be inviting for beginners too.

The logo was bespoke made by hand, incorporating long rounded edges to signify the shapes of the body whilst the straight lines and chunky weight keep it legible and clean. I made versions with and without the ‘yoga studio’ lockup to enable easy use of the logo in different scenarios, as well as the ‘K’ brand mark in an organic oval from the brand pattern which is great for small spaces.

The brand pattern is also made by hand using overlapping watercolours in warped ovals that represent the flowing nature of yoga movements without having any cliche yoga elements such as lotus flowers, candles or mandalas.

The colour palette is soft, made from primary accents of burnt orange set against a cream and off-black base, as seen in the studio itself. To balance the reds I also brought in some cooler tones, using beige, sand and sage to complement the warmer shades.

The owners felt that the previous ‘Falmouth Yoga Studio’ branding was a little clinical and the cool blue tones didn’t feel inviting. The name was forgettable, blending in and often confused with other yoga studios in the area. The owners discovered the word ‘Kula’ meaning ‘tribe’ or ‘community’ in Sanskrit, the perfect narrative for a warm and welcoming community studio and the whole look and feel of the branding was built around this idea.

The Kula website is built on Squarespace. This user-friendly platform allows the admin team to be able to easily make changes to details like timetable changes and adding bios about new members of staff. I stripped out a lot of unnecessary navigation from the previous website to ensure customers could find what they needed quickly and easily and made CTA’s simple and bold to enable a clear journey.

I also undertook a small photoshoot with the team at Kula to enable them to have a bank of professional images for launching the rebrand on social media and to create content on the website.
